Needs and Expenses of the Palm Tree Orphanage

Teaching Staff

As the number of children at the Palm Tree Orphanage increases, so does the need for teaching support. The Palm Tree Orphanage needs English, computer science, pre-school, art and music teachers. We also want to increase salaries and training for our current teachers. Currently, the Palm Tree Orphanage has seven staff members attending University, and several others are studying English and other subjects.

Costs:

  • one non-teaching staff member's salary and expenses cost $100 - $150 every month
  • one general teacher's salary and expenses cost $150 - $250 every month
  • one English speaking teacher's salary and expenses cost $400-600 every month
  • the salary of a ceramics/art teacher costs $1,800 per year
  • the salary of a music/vocal teacher costs $1,200 per year
  • the yearly cost of the preschool program is $2,400 per year
  • books and equipment for the preschool costs $1,200 per year
  • the university education of a staff member or orphan student costs $7,200 ($1,800 yearly)

Maintenance and Operating Expenses

Cambodia's Hope maintains the daily operation of The Palm Tree Orphanage. We plan to supply tents and camping equipment for future excursions throughout Cambodia as the land mine clean up continues and more of the country is safer to explore.

Education is fundamental to our goals, and we want to set up an education fund that will offer young Cambodians opportunities for education that they could not otherwise afford.

Costs:

  • one child's food and vitamins cost $30 every month
  • one child's total expenses cost $100 per month
  • books for the library, art supplies, or sports equipment cost $10 - $100
  • school clothes and shoes for one child cost $40 per year
  • a musical instrument costs $50-200
  • one school-aged child's sponsorship costs $1200 for a year
  • one pre-school-aged child's sponsorship costs $720 for a year
  • a motor scooter that can be used for errands costs $1,200
  • a van that can be used as transportation for the children costs $5,500

Health Care

The Palm Tree Orphanage needs a director of health education and recreation to coordinate and teach sports, physical education, play, healthy living and hygiene. Also, as the children grow, they will have a need to learn about STDs, self protection and care.

The newly constructed clinic and pharmacy needs a constant supply of equipment and medicine, as well as a supervising physician and nurse to come in on a regular basis. This new clinic can serve the children and staff of the Palm Tree Orphanage, as well as the neighborhood. Donations helped to purchase a Land Cruiser that has been outfitted as a medical support vehicle. It will provide medical service to the Farm and provincial areas.

Costs:

  • one child's round of basic antibiotics costs $10
  • one child's vitamin supplements cost $60 every month
  • each child's dental check-up costs $150
  • the salary of a Health and Recreation Director costs $1,650 per year
  • the mobile medical unit costs $7,000 ($10,000 has already been donated)
  • diesel and supplies for the mobile medical unit cost $1,800 every year
  • construction and equipment of the clinic cost $8,000 ($10,000 already donated)
  • supplies for the medical clinic cost $1,200 every year
  • the salary of the physician costs $3,000 every year
  • the salary of the nurse costs $1,500 every year
  • the salary for the full-time licensed medical assistant costs $1,800 every year

Shelving/Furnishing for New Classrooms

After so much hard work, and because of so many generous donations, the second floor addition to the main Palm Tree building has been completed. This addition houses four large classrooms and an office, as well as a third floor open air structure with wall enclosures and a roof. This room is used as a play area or additional instruction space.

This new space needs shelving, which is very expensive in Cambodia. Like any school, there is a constant need for classroom furnishings and supplies, such as white boards and markers. Any donations made specifically for school supplies are always greatly appreciated.

Construction of the library has also been completed. Right now, it is a large room with little in it; supplies, books, shelves and other furnishings are needed to complete the library.

Costs:

  • completing a library with shelving, books, furnishing and supplies costs $20,000
  • build a village school and run it for a year for up to 80 children costs $40,000

Ceramics Project

In January 2008, the ceramics project was launched by Martine Vermeulen. Donors have provided a kiln and some wheels, but there is a continuing need for supplies. Donations will help to pay for an on-site teacher, clay (which is very expensive in Cambodia), glazing and firing of the pottery made by the children.

Sewing Project

A hemstitch machine and two hand looms for weaving silk are needed for the sewing project. This project has enabled the children of the Palm Tree Orphanage an opportunity to make their own clothes and school uniforms, as well as items that can be bought at the Unique Boutique.

Costs:

  • fabric for the sewing project costs $50 and up
  • hand looms cost $360 each (two cost $720)
  • an embroidery machine costs $485
  • a hemstitch machine costs $485

Excursions

Excursions are important to the childrens' understanding of their country and their heritage. They learn as they explore and travel.

Costs:

  • taking 30 orphaned children to the beach for a weekend costs $500
  • taking 30 orphaned children to Angkor Wat costs $750
  • taking 30 orphaned children on a Mekong River Boat Ride with a meal costs $100
  • taking 100 orphaned children for a day at the water park with a meal costs $400
