Ongoing ProjectsCambodia's Hope intends to foster the talents of the children of the Palm Tree Orphanage so that they can support themselves to prepare for productive, caring lives. We have begun several ongoing projects to encourage this process, which are paid for by donations. education - Cambodia's Hope supplements the four-hour Government school day of the children at the Palm Tree Center with classes in English, computer technology and accounting. We also sponsor University training and special classes for staff personnel. sewing project - In 2004, five sewing machines were purchased and the sewing room was built at the Palm Tree Orphanage. Staff members teach the children how to sew and create patterns. The children will eventually sell their creations, furthering them on the path towards self-sufficiency. Fabric is always needed for the sewing project, as are additional machines. art - Every child has a portable portfolio with paper and materials for drawing, and in January 2008, we launched a ceramics project, which is directed by Martine Vermeulen. The children need raw materials to ensure the success of this project. Like the sewing project, the children will eventually sell the crafts they create, enabling them to become more self-sufficient. dance program - Five times per week, over half of the 93 children practice classical Cambodian dancing, and they perform at a competitive level. Beautiful costumes have been donated to the children for their performances, but donations help with transportation costs. music program - 15 children practice both modern and classical Cambodian music. They study musical instruments and voice training, and play at the dance troupe's performances and for special occasions. There is a need for support, which can purchase instruction and additional instruments, as well as covering transportation costs. excursions - Donations help to pay for trips to museums, the beach, swimming pool, water park complex and throughout Cambodia. Angkor Wat has been the farthest destination and a highlight of the children's lives; they know it is the soul of their culture. recreation - Soccer, volleyball, badminton, basketball and traditional Cambodian games and sports are popular activities. Donations have helped purchase bicycles, rollerblades, snorkeling and sports equipment, and there is a continuing need for additional equipment. |
